In the past, the Breite plateau was mostly a marshy area (Forsat 1948). Nowadays, the wetlands maintain especially in the Southern part of the plateau where we can still find marshy patches with specific vegetation.

Most of the drainage ditches were dug in the Southern part of the plateau, which confirms that in the past the wetlands were well represented here. The drainage ditches are the most stable aquatic habitats on the plateau, followed by the archaeological ditches and finally by the ponds which are mostly temporary.
