About Breite
The Breite plateau near Sighisoara is the largest, most representative and well preserved wood pasture habitat with ancient Sessile Oak (Querqus petraea) and Pedunculate Oak (Querqus robur) trees in Central and Eastern Europe. By its origin, the Breite plateau is a “culturally modified” forest, bearing both the mark of over eight centuries of local Saxon culture, as well as the mark of a rich and varied nature. This double origin gives the Breite Reserve multiple exceptional values – from historical, cultural and ecological, to aesthetic and emotional ones. Both in terms of natural heritage and as a live testimony to the history of Sighisoara, Breite represents a unique value in Europe.
